Monday Musings 3/30

Today’s Musings is from Belanna at Odds
Scrapping Order from Chaos
I’d be willing to bet I’m not the only one that occasionally feels guilty because I’m scrapping when there are a million and one things around the house that need doing…and when my long-suffering other half commented on Saturday morning that he wished I was as diligent about organizing stuff in the real world as I was about doing it on my hard drive…the guilt went into overdrive. But truth to tell, I enjoy organizing my digital stash and it’s certainly more fun than sorting and tidying drawers and closets.
And then a light flashed on somewhere six inches above my head and I realised that I’d missed a huge opportunity…instead of avoiding the dreaded spring clean and sort – I should be using my scrapping skills to make it more enjoyable. So I spent a few minutes instructing my bewildered other half, then equipped with the camera he marched boldly into the nearest closet.
Meanwhile I set to with gusto creating frames and hanging tags – and as the day wore on, hubby supplied me with a seemingly endless stream of photos, while I built up a neat pile of printed goodies next to me just waiting to be trimmed and put to good use. By Sunday afternoon, to hubby’s amazement and amusement, everything in our closets was neatly sorted, wrapped, stacked, boxed, or hung as appropriate – and each sported it’s very own (and very pretty!) identifying label. No more hunting for stray shoes or rifling through garment covers.
“See?” I said rather smugly, “Scrapping IS a useful hobby, isn’t it?” He nodded and beamed approvingly, and while I carried on congratulating myself on my brilliant idea, I didn’t notice him disappearing into the garage with camera. An hour or so later, he reappeared and dropped the camera down beside me like a puppy with a ball waiting to play fetch. “My turn,” he grinned. And sure enough the camera was full of pictures of drawers full of tools and boxes of bits and bolts and….other stuff I couldn’t name to save my life.
“And what exactly would you like me to do with these?” I asked, dreading the answer. “Scrap ‘em,” he said, “Y’know, so I can find stuff easy. But…ah, try to make them a little less…” and I could tell he was struggling to find just the right word…. “a little less….pretty.” He smiled.
Sigh! Oh well…denim and rivets at the ready then…at least he’s beginning to appreciate the ‘useful’ aspect of my passion!

The word for today is RAIN!
You can use this poem in your layout about rain or you can find one of your own. We used to sing this song when it rained while watching it out the window. It would make a great layout to get a photo of a child looking out the window at the weather and have this poem on the layout.
It’s raining, it’s pouring;
The old man is snoring.
Bumped his head
And he went to bed
And he couldn’t get up in the morning. Rain, rain, go away;
Come again another day;
Little Johnny wants to play.
I guess I am hung up on rain at the moment as we are in a drought stricken area. We had a little rain a week ago but it was not enough by a long shot to make it safe around here.
Tuesday Tutorials 3/24

Today’s tutorial is for users of Photoshop Elements and is about making realistic shadows. While many of us have come to the realization that putting shadows on our layouts makes them look much better, it becomes tricky at times. I especially wish to mention that if you are going to upload your layout to the gallery here or at another online gallery, you need to be careful about how you go about getting your layout ready for uploading in regards to the shadows. Please flatten your image first before reducing the size of the layout. That way the shadows stay in proportion to your layout. Otherwise, your photos and elements on the layout will look like they are floating six inches off the paper. Of course, you need to be careful to do this to a copy of your layout, not your original as you will need to full size layout for printing.
The tutorial is from Cottage Arts and can be found at:
Monday Musing 3/23
Monday, March 23rd, 2009 | Monday Musings | No Comments
Today’s Monday Muse comes from Mina of Mina’s Scraps
Lately I quite like the cleaner, crisper style of page layout that is like those of magazine layouts - perfect for print matter like portfolios and stylish photo books. I’ve been starting to experiment with (horror of horrors) NO background paper - just the plain white you begin with once you’ve fired up your graphics program.
I have also taken to using more of the basic fonts already on my machine and copyright free. In particular ‘Arial’ is a most basic, clean font with no serifs (those tail things on the end of strokes which you can see in the ‘Times New Roman’ font).
The only hiccup I find with this kind of thing is to be very mindful of ‘white space’. How to balance the page nicely is a trick I have yet to master. Some people can plonk things on a page and it will look brilliant. Alas - I am not one of those. Maybe with practice…(here’s hoping!)
I think these kinds of layouts are very elegant, the white helping stark contrast with colour values but that is just my opinion.
