Hello Darlings! Had a lot of trouble with my poor machine of late, so I’ve been missing in action. After a terrible spate of viruses the thing gave up. My budget didn’t allow for techie help or a new machine, so I had to bumble about and rebuild the thing myself. That done- had some browsing issues, and couldn’t see some images. I know the same kinds of things have been happening with some of the other designers at DigiScrapStation - so these problems must be rampant netwise. So, tentatively I am back (I have said that about 3 times previously). Luckily for me, my DigiScrapStation sisters have come to rescue and have been posting here. Thank you darlings.

A little history: ALBUM: - The word comes from Greco-Roman times when a praetor’s public notices were recorded on paper tablets/white tables.

The earliest known reference to an album is 1598, but notebooks used to collect information started a lot earler in the times of Aristotle (around 342 BC) and Cicero. Notebooks were used to discuss philosophical, religious and rhetorical subjects.

All for now, Mina :)

What exactly is a musing?  LOL

Whatever it is I don’t seem to be too good at it!

On TheFreeDictionary.com a musing is:

mus·ing

adj. Deep in thought; contemplative.

noun: 1. Contemplation; meditation.

2. A product of contemplation; a thought.

Some of the words the Thesaurus uses for musings are:

noun: thinking, reflection, meditation, abstraction, contemplation, introspection, dreaming, day-dreaming, absent-mindedness, woolgathering
Okay, so maybe I can do the dreaming, day-dreaming and absent-mindedness parts! LOL
What do you muse about?  Let us know in the comments section in today’s post.

As I meet other scrappers the most common thing I hear is “I’m no good at journaling” or something akin to that.  Apparently everyone feels comfortable putting pictures and embellishments on paper and creating fantastic works of art, but not many feel comfortable with their own voice or writing.  That’s a shame, becuase to me, that’s what makes scrapbooking such a wonderful memorial.  We’ve all seen those pictures of family members we never knew.  Sometimes you can just sit there and look into the eyes of those pictures and just wish that person were around to tell you what their lives were like.  Well, don’t forget that one day you’re going to be one of those pictures and somebody will sit looking into your eyes.  But with your scrapbooks you can answer them.

We all learned in high school how to tell a newspaper story.  Who, what, when, where and how.  Your pages should include some of these elements too.  Hopefully you’ll do several pages with your kids and family so you won’t need to say who they are on each and every page.  But make sure you do say who they are at some point.  You may think it’s obvious that folks know that’s your son but remember we’re talking about people that never even met you and to whom that bouncing baby in your arms has always been an old man.

The “What” and “Where” questions are good ones for a tag.  You can have just a quick tag saying what you were doing and where you were.  Then in your journaling explain a bit more about what it was you were doing.  What was it like?  What were you feeling when you did it?  What were the folks around you acting like?

I don’t know that “how” is so important on a layout page but “why” (which was not taught to me as a standard newspaper question) can be one of the most important questions you can answer.  Why did you go to that festival?  Why does Johnny have that silly grin on his face?  Why is the baby covered in mud or shaving cream?  Why did you put that picture of Susan in her tutu in there?  Why did you think that picture was so good?  Why can be a very, very important question.

See, journaling isn’t so hard.  No one says you have to write “War and Peace”.  But journaling is what makes scrapbooking different from collecting photos in a photo album.  As when you’re writing anything, think of your audience.  And your audience is yourself, but a later version of you…. you know, that same person that you have been looking at old pictures and wishing you could talk to that person for just a few moments.  That’s who you’re writing for.  Now go write!
